INTRODUCTORY QUESTIONS

An introductory question is used to introduce the participant to the topic. The question should be general and asked to the group as a whole (no more round-robin). The purpose of this question is less about generating data and more about getting the group comfortable and oriented. A focus group agenda may contain one or two introductory questions. Once again, not a lot of time is spent on introductory questions; usually about five minutes is sufficient.

TRANSITION QUESTIONS

The transition questions serve, as the name suggests, as a link from the previous question to the main questions that the researcher is interested in having answered. These questions create a flow that enables participants to continue thinking about the focus group topic in more depth. One or two transition questions are usually sufficient. Five to ten minutes, depending on the total amount of time allotted for each focus group meeting, is adequate for transition questions.
